by Joyce Chiew (Mississauga Chinese Alliance Church)
My name is Joyce from MCAC. I’m 17 years old and I’m going into grade 12. Since I was young I’ve been more introverted and I don’t typically step out of my comfort zone. Everything, from attending MCAC for the first time, to interacting with people in a new country with a big language barrier was completely different from my normal life. Coming into a mission trip, I had many preconceived opinions and thoughts which made me scared. I thought I wouldn’t be able to connect with any kids or be able to make an impact.

We went to a church plant in Simbal, we had the opportunity to minister to the kids by singing 3 songs: Yo Tengo Gozo, Padre Abraham, and Cristo me Ama. However, just in our first few days in Peru, the impact we had was incredible. When we sang and did actions for the children, I could see their willingness to participate, sing, and have fun. Many of them despite knowing us for 3 hours were very attached to us and showed their joy through their actions and laughter.Through thatit showed me that the joy of Jesus is universal no matter what language you speakeveryone can feel the love of God. This has showed me that God’s love is unconditional and reaches all over the world!

Before Peru, I prayed that no matter my doubts, I would push myself to show the joy and love of Jesus that I’ve experienced in my own life. What I didn’t realize is that they would be the ones showing me how to be joyful no matter what circumstances. The children were so full of energy from the moment we saw them. They immediately ran to hug us and play with us, a huge group of foreigners. While the kids may not have many material possessions, they were happier and more welcoming than anyone I know in Canada. Their joy has been infectious and has pushed me to give my 110% in everything we do in Peru. In Canada, we complain about everything and anything, but here in Trujillo, complaining is not a part of their lifestyle. Despite only being here for 3 days, I can see God working in everything, especially through the children's ministry. It has inspired me to look at my own life and reflect on the things that I often complain about. These 3 days in Peru have encouraged me to seek similar experiences in my future career!
The verse that has stayed with me throughout the whole trip is Proverbs 3:5-7.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil.”

Thank you very much for Joyce's sharing. This is exciting! Mission trip is a life-changing experience. God aligns our worldview with his in mission trip. May God continue to strengthen and keep your team and other teams this year to be many blessings to others. May My prayers with you all!
